Walk in him

As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him,

Colossians 2:6

If we have truly received Christ deep within our hearts, our new life will show that close relationship with him through a life of faith. “Walking” means taking action — our faith should not be limited to private prayer or thought; we must live out what we believe in everyday life.

If someone walks in Christ, they act as Christ would act. Since Christ lives in them — as their hope, love, joy, and life — they reflect his character. People who see such a person can say, “He is like his Master; he lives like Jesus Christ.”

Walking also means progress. “So walk in him” means to keep growing — moving from one level of grace to another, advancing until you reach as much understanding of Christ as is possible in this life.

Walking also means consistency. We must remain in Christ continually. Many Christians think it’s enough to meet with Jesus in prayer morning and evening, then live for the world the rest of the day — but that’s a poor way to live. We should stay with him always, following his steps and doing his will in all things.

Walking also suggests habit. When we talk about someone’s “walk,” we mean their daily lifestyle and regular behavior. If we sometimes enjoy Christ but then forget him, if we call him ours for a moment and then lose that connection, that’s not a true habit — we’re not walking in him. We must stay close to him, cling to him, never let go, and live our whole life in him.

“As you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him.” Continue as you began — just as Christ was at first the foundation of your faith, the source of your life, the motivation for your actions, and the joy of your spirit, let him remain all these things until the end of your life. Let him be the same when you pass through the valley of the shadow of death and when you enter the eternal joy and rest that God has prepared for his people.

Holy Spirit, help us to live according to this heavenly command.
